Have you been referred to hospital or Community service? What next?
Referrals to Secondary Care and Community Services
When your GP decides you need specialist care or community support, they will make a referral. This could be to a hospital consultant, a therapist, or another healthcare professional.
Once your referral is made:
- You may be contacted directly by the service to arrange an appointment.
- Some referrals go through a central booking system, and you might be given a choice of hospitals or clinics.
If you are waiting for an appointment and have not heard about an appointment date, in the first instance you should try and contact the organisation and department to which you have been referred.

Checking Your Referral and Waiting Times
To track the progress of your referral or check waiting times, you can use the Planned Care NHS website: Planned My Care
This site provides up-to-date information on waiting lists, helping you understand how long you might have to wait and what support is available while you wait for treatment.
If you have any concerns about your referral, please don’t hesitate to contact the surgery.
