Overview

Pharmacy First Service is an NHS initiative designed to offer patients easy access to healthcare advice and treatment for minor ailments directly from their local pharmacy. This service aims to alleviate the pressure on GPs and A&E departments by providing an alternative, convenient, and efficient route for patients to receive the care they need.

Services Offered

Under the Pharmacy First Service, pharmacists can:

Offer clinical advice and treatment for minor illnesses such as coughs, colds, sore throats, skin conditions, and more. (this applies for adult & children >12)

  • Provide over-the-counter medications, where appropriate, without the need for a GP prescription.
  • See and supply medications for common conditions:
  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women. (Women 16-64yrs)
  • Sinusitis (adults and children over 12 years)
  • Earache in children (aged 1-17 years)
  • Sore throat (adults and children over 5 years)
  • Infected insect bite (adults and children over 1 year)
  • Impetigo (adults and children over 1 year)
  • Shingles (adults over 18)
  • Offer emergency contraception and advice. (Over 16years old)
  • Conduct medication reviews to ensure patients are taking their medications correctly.

Criteria for Patients

To be eligible for the Pharmacy First Service, patients must meet certain criteria as outlined by the NHS:

  1. Residency: The patient must be a resident of the UK.
  2. Condition: The patient must present with a minor ailment that can be appropriately managed by a pharmacist.
  3. Age: Some treatments may have age restrictions; for example, certain medications may only be supplied to adults or children over a specific age.
  4. Registration: In some cases, the patient may need to be registered with a GP practice that participates in the Pharmacy First scheme.
  5. Exclusion Criteria: Patients with more serious conditions, symptoms recurrence or symptoms that may indicate a severe illness will be referred to their GP or an appropriate healthcare provider.
